20th Century African Palaver Chair – Hand-Carved Hardwood
A striking 20th-century African Palaver chair, hand-carved from dense hardwood and rich in symbolic detail. Traditionally used in communal meeting spaces, palaver chairs were designed as seats of authority and storytelling, often reserved for elders or figures of importance.
This example features a dramatically carved backrest with layered figurative and natural motifs, giving the piece a powerful sculptural presence. The low seat and angled legs emphasise its ceremonial origins, while the deeply worked surface highlights the skill and intention of the maker.
Equally suited as a functional seat or as a sculptural object, this chair works beautifully in a contemporary interior as a standalone statement piece.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with surface wear, patina and marks consistent with age and use, adding to its character and authenticity.
